We started 500px a long time ago with the idea that all images had to be 500 pixels wide. The monitors were smaller than (circa 2003?) and it seemed to be the right image size at that point. Lots of things changed since that time — we got bigger monitors and higher resolution cameras. File sizes also increased. We initially set our file size limit to 10MB. In 2009 it seemed like a large enough JPG photo file size. Also, our single server at that time could not process a lot of large images if they came in volumes even remotely close to what we are processing now. But now is the time to change — the cameras are getting even more higher resolution and file sizes grow. And we got bigger and faster servers now :) So, I just increased the file size limit to 30MB. I hope this is going to be enough for most of our users for a while. This will also allow our users to upload they photos in high-rez and sell good quality prints, when they enable the photo store. We always welcome feedback, so let us know what you think.
